We brought Monash University and Alpha60 together for a week-long activation at Melbourne’s Chapter House. Visitors were invited to engage with our bespoke software and create their own custom-designed piece of 3D printed jewellery.

Dressing up materials science

Monash had identified that awareness of materials science as a discipline was low among the general public. We helped the Department showcase the creative applications of materials science and engage students and faculty staff with the community outside their usual heavy industry partners.

A cool, quirky keepsake made with cutting-edge technology

We introduced the MSE Department to stakeholders beyond its traditional industry partners, establishing partnership between the Department and local boutique fashion label ALPHA60. We hosted an activation as part of Melbourne Fashion Week on its buzzing opening night. The event explored how 3D printing could revolutionise fashion: attendees shaped their own special piece of jewellery using our custom software, then turn their design into a reality using 3D printers operated by a team of Monash students.

ALPHA60’s Flinders Lane shopfront became a pop-up exhibition, showcasing Monash and materials science for thousands of passers-by.

The project was developed in close collaboration with under- and postgraduate Monash MSE students.

The overwhelming press interest and lines out the door on the night were a testament to the great things that can happen when you combine cutting edge fashion, enthusiastic students and new materials engineering.  

Local Peoples works, creates and plays on the lands of the Wurundjeri, Bunurong and Wathaurong peoples of the Kulin Nation, land which has never been ceded. We thank them them for caring for this land for over 40,000 years and recognise and pay our deepest respect to elders past, present and emerging. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
