First look at the attributes of the individual candidates..
– Does this candidate have the soft skills and emotional intelligence to be a collaborative member of a diverse team? (e.g. empathy; willingness to learn; active listening; valuing diversity; inclusivity; enthusiasm)
– Does this candidate have the technical skills and expertise required for the task at hand? (e.g. domain expertise; production skills; problem solving skills)
– What other strengths does this candidate have that could be leveraged for the project? (e.g. excellent verbal communication, lived experience of the issue at hand, calming presence for others, instinctive educator)
– What working style, language, and accessibility requirements will you need to incorporate to best serve this candidate?
Then look at the composition of the team as a whole…
– What combination of technical skills and domain expertise do you require to deliver the project? Does the team encompass this range?
– Does the team encompass individuals with a range of identity characteristics? Who is missing and why (reflect on your recruitment approach)?
– What is the combination of personality types across the groups?
–Do you have an appropriate mix of e.g. big picture thinkers, detail-oriented thinkers, leaders, facilitators, supporters, introverts and extroverts?
