Local Peoples have gone net carbon zero.
We are living in a climate crisis.
Currently fossil fuels contribute approximately 89 percent of the globe’s carbon emissions. To prevent catastrophic climate change, we need to at least halve global carbon emissions by 2030. To keep global warming below 1.5 degrees, emissions need to reach zero by at least 2050.
That’s why in 2020, Local Peoples made the commitment to reducing our operations to net carbon zero.
At Local Peoples, we take environmental responsibility seriously.
Across our work, we ask the question – what impact will this have on the environment and how can we minimise or eliminate it?
We believe that what we design should be a step toward the future that we want to inhabit: a more social, sustainable and empathic world. That’s why our projects are judged on how they create beneficial social, environmental and economic outcomes for our clients.
We also aim to further climate action through our work. For example, we recently supported the Victorian Government and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) with the launch of the new Victorian Climate Action Plan.
We worked with DELWP (view the full case study here) to promote the Victorian Government’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, creating two films along with social collateral to generate broader community awareness.
To help us achieve net carbon zero, we have partnered with Greenfleet.
Greenfleet is a leading environmental non-profit organisation and Australia’s most trusted source of biodiverse carbon offsets to take practical climate action. Wayne Wescott, CEO of Greenfleet believes partnerships like this are vital.
“At Greenfleet, we are restoring native forests and growing climate hope thanks to the contributions of our amazing supporters, just like Local Peoples.
Through this unique partnership, Local Peoples were able to plant enough native trees to absorb 72.00 tonnes of CO2 emissions across 2020.
This helped us reach carbon neutrality for the year!
Pino Demaio – founder of Local Peoples – believes that initiatives like this will keep us accountable in creating meaningful change for future generations.
“Our climate action provides genuine and lasting environmental benefits.
“By offsetting our emissions with Greenfleet, we are taking practical action against climate change and helping to restore Australia’s forests, recreate crucial habitat for native wildlife and transform degraded land back to its natural state.
“We will continue to build on this action – this is the decade that requires unilateral change”.
